A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
