Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
