Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
